Why the Diaspora Is an Asset, Not a Liability

When we talk about development, we often focus on what’s within a country’s borders its infrastructure, industries, institutions. But what about those who’ve crossed borders? Non-resident Bangladeshis (NRBs) are sometimes seen as distant or disconnected, but in truth, they are one of Bangladesh’s most valuable assets. It’s time to shift the mindset: the diaspora is not a loss it is a living, global resource.

The Brain Drain Misconception

For decades, the term “brain drain” has described the departure of skilled professionals to wealthier nations. While it’s true that many NRBs have left in search of better education, careers, and quality of life, this outflow does not have to mean loss. Instead, it presents a new kind of opportunity:

  • A global network of skilled individuals
  • Exposure to best practices and innovation
  • Access to financial capital and global markets

Rather than focusing on what we’ve lost, let’s focus on what we’ve gained and can still gain by engaging the diaspora meaningfully.

How Diaspora Becomes an Asset

1. Knowledge Transfer

NRBs who work and learn in world-class environments can bring back knowledge, ideas, and systems that improve how we teach, build, lead, and innovate in Bangladesh.

For example, an NRB tech expert can advise a local startup on how to scale internationally or even co-found one.

2. Investment & Philanthropy

Remittances are only one part of the picture. Many NRBs want to invest in Bangladesh’s future, from real estate to social ventures, education to entrepreneurship. With the right structure and trust, this can become a huge economic engine.

3. Global Ambassadors

Every Bangladeshi living abroad is a brand ambassador for the nation. Through their careers, networks, and leadership, they are reshaping the global perception of Bangladesh from one of poverty to one of promise.

4. Bridge-Builders

Diaspora members serve as cultural and professional bridges connecting Bangladesh with global institutions, universities, businesses, and governments.

Shifting the Narrative: From Drain to Gain

To fully unlock this potential, we must change the way we talk about the diaspora. We must create platforms that engage them as partners, not just remittance senders. That means:

  • Listening to their voices in national planning
  • Creating clear pathways for return or contribution
  • Valuing their global insights in policy, innovation, and education

The Role of BOND

At BOND (Bridging Organization with NRBs for Development), we believe the future of Bangladesh includes not excludes our diaspora. Our mission is to:

  • Build strategic partnerships with NRBs
  • Facilitate knowledge exchange and innovation
  • Mobilize diaspora-led initiatives for national development

Conclusion: A Future Worth Co-Creating

Bangladesh’s development journey does not end at its borders. In fact, it expands through every Bangladeshi abroad who still dreams of home. Let’s move beyond the myth of loss and embrace the truth of shared growth. With the diaspora as allies, Bangladesh can rise stronger, smarter, and more connected to the world.
